Finding the Beauty through the Pain
Julie’s Reflection Pause for this chapter is set out below in full, in her words. 9 questions to sit with, and a journal is all they ask for.
Reflection Pause: Witnessing Love, Loss, and Presence with a Photo
Julie prints this at the end of the chapter. It is here in her words, unedited.
Before moving into the questions, take a moment to honor whatever you may have experienced while sitting with your photograph. Memory does not live only in the mind. It lives in the body, it lives in sensation, breath, emotion, and our nervous system response. When you allow yourself to witness both love and loss at the same time, you are practicing living awake. You are allowing life to move through you without turning away.
This reflection is not about analyzing the moment or doing it “right.” It is an invitation to notice. To feel. To become aware of how connection continues to exist within you, even when someone or something you love is no longer physically present.
The photograph you chose matters. Something in you was drawn to that image, a moment of connection, belonging, joy, love, tenderness, or meaning. Trust your choice. Your body often recognizes significance before your mind does. Move slowly through the questions. Pause when you need to. Let your body guide the pace.
Somatic Awareness — Listening to the Body
- As you looked at the photograph, what sensations arose in your body?
- Where did you feel the strongest response? In your chest, throat, stomach, face, hands, elsewhere?
- Did you notice warmth, heaviness, tightness, numbness, movement, or energy?
- What happened in your breath as you connected with the memory?
- Did any sensations shift when you allowed yourself to stay present with the image?
- What does this teach you about how your body carries love and grief?
Emotional Experience — Witnessing the Moment
- What emotions surfaced as you connected with this memory?
- What does this moment represent in your life story?
- What love existed in this experience that still lives within you now?
Closing Integration
When you have completed the reflection, take a moment to notice your body again.
What feels different now, even slightly? Perhaps there is more sensation, more emotion,
more softness or awareness.
Place a hand on your heart or wherever you may feel sensations most strongly. Take one slow breath. This experience is an example of living and dying awake, allowing love and grief to coexist without closing your heart to either.
You are learning that connection does not end.
It changes form and continues to live within you.
