Blessings of your Tribe. Connection to Your Roots and Branches of Support
Julie’s Reflection Pause for this chapter is set out below in full, in her words. 7 questions to sit with, and a journal is all they ask for.
Reflection Pause: Rooted in Love After Loss
Julie prints this at the end of the chapter. It is here in her words, unedited.
After death, the world can feel unstable, leaving you to feel that life is uncertain. In that uncertainty, you may feel shaken and wonder where safety now lives in your life. Love does not disappear in grief, rather it changes form. You may find that that support will reveal itself in new ways, through people, memories, presence, and connection with others and your own inner strength.
This reflection exercise invites you to explore the roots that still hold you, the heartwood that remains unbroken, and the connections that continue to nourish your life.
Take a few moments to breathe. Consider placing your hands over your heart as you reflect before you write.
- Who has been part of the “roots” supporting you during this time of loss—those who have steadied, comforted, or simply stood beside you?
- What memories of love or connection with your person continue to nourish you from within?
- When you feel most shaken, what helps you remember that you are not alone?
- What qualities within yourself—your heartwood—have helped you endure what once felt impossible?
- How has grief revealed strength, compassion, or courage that you may not have recognized before?
- In what ways are you still connected to those you love, including those who have transitioned?
- What does it mean for you, right now, to be both rooted and growing?
If you imagine yourself as a living tree, supported below with deep roots, strong within like the metaphor of the heartwood, and reaching outward with long branches to embrace you, what do you notice about your capacity to continue living and loving?
