Live and Die Awake
Chapter 17

Awakening to your Truth

Julie’s Reflection Pause for this chapter is set out below in full, in her words. 21 questions to sit with, and a journal is all they ask for.

From the book

Reflection Pause: Diving Deeper into Living and Dying Awake

Julie prints this at the end of the chapter. It is here in her words, unedited.

Ground – Arrive – Remember: The goal is for you to remember the truth within your body without re-traumatizing. I want you to honor your deepest truth while staying grounded and centered.

The Descent

Somatic and Sensory

  1. Where does your body still hold unfinished stories?
  2. What sensations arise when you slow down enough to listen? Do you feel tightness, warmth, numbness, or pressure within your body?
  3. If this sensation had a temperature, texture, or weight, what would it be? How would you describe it?

Memory and Meaning

  1. What loss, rupture, or turning point quietly reorganized your life even if you didn’t name it at the time?
  2. What did you have to let go of before you were ready?
  3. What belief about yourself or the world was formed in that shattering?

Truth-Telling

  1. What part of your story have you minimized or rushed past?
  2. What truth have you carried silently because it felt too heavy to share, too dark to speak the truth?
  3. What does your body want you to know now that your mind resisted then?

The Witness

Notice - Honor – Stay: The goal is for you to identify your pain in relationship with your personal experiences. By doing so, this is where you will meet your inner grace.

Presence and Compassion

  1. Can you stay with this moment without fixing, explaining, or judging it?
  2. What happens when you offer yourself the same patience you give others?
  3. Where do you feel steadiness or support within your body, even alongside discomfort?

Identity and Resilience

  1. Who did you become because you survived what you lived through?
  2. What inner companion of your most inner self did you find: courage, humor, devotion, intuition? Other?
  3. How has your suffering refined your capacity for empathy or discernment?

Reframing and Integration

1. What was asked of you that you did not choose but occurred anyway?

2. How did this season shape your values, boundaries, or sense of meaning?

3. What part of you deserves acknowledgment for how hard it tried?

The Rise

Integrate - Soften – Choose: This is your path to embodied becoming and how you may choose to live each moment, each day, differently.

Release and Reorientation

  1. What identity, role, or expectation are you ready to loosen?
  2. What are you still carrying that was never yours to hold?
  3. What does your nervous system need in order to feel safe enough to expand?

Soul Direction

  1. What feels quietly alive in you now?
  2. What calls to you, not urgently, but persistently?
  3. If you trusted your inner knowing, what would you stop forcing?

Embodied Living

1. What does presence look like in your daily life, not as an idea, but as a practice?

2. How do you want to meet the ordinary moments of your life?

3. What would it mean to live as someone who knows they are finite and awake?

Closing Integration

Complete this sentence slowly, honestly, and without editing:
From these ashes, I rise as ____________________.

You may return to these questions again and again. Each time, you will meet them as someone new.

This is the practice of Living and Dying Awake, not fixing what shattered,
but witnessing what became holy through the breaking and making an intentional choice to RISE and AWAKEN to live with purpose and meaning.
