Live and Die Awake
Chapter 18

Radical Forgiveness

Julie’s Reflection Pause for this chapter is set out below in full, in her words. 16 questions to sit with, and a journal is all they ask for.

Reflection Pause: Experiencing Radical Forgiveness

Julie prints this at the end of the chapter. It is here in her words, unedited.

These questions are designed to challenge you to go deeper into the five stages of radical forgiveness, uncovering the gifts buried within the pain.

1. Telling the Story

  • What happened?
  • Write the raw, unfiltered truth of how you experienced it.
  • Who do you still hold responsible? Name them.
  • In this stage, you must own your own story of victimhood and write the uncensored truth of your past so that you may move forward to healing.

2. Feeling the Feelings

  • What emotions arise when you recall this story? Rage? Betrayal? Deep sadness?
  • Where do you feel these emotions in your body?
  • What do your emotions need from you right now?
  • Do they need expression, acknowledgment, release?

3. Collapsing the Story

  • If you step back, what assumptions or judgments are you making about this event?
  • How might your story be incomplete or distorted by your perspective?
  • This step helps us recognize that our narratives can trap us in the past and reinforce a victim mindset.

4. Reframing the Story

  • If you assume nothing went wrong, what valuable lesson or benefit could be hidden here?
  • How has this person or situation been a “soul teacher,” even if you resist calling them by this name?

5. Integrating the Shift

  • What new truth about yourself can you claim because of this experience? For example: I am resilient. I am learning boundaries. I can love without conditions.
  • What daily practice can you create to anchor this forgiveness into your life?
  • You may consider meditation, prayer, mantra, ritual, symbol that provides personal meaning or a breath practice.

Radical forgiveness does not ask you to deny your pain. It asks you to honor it fully, then lift it into the light, where transformation can occur. Each time you walk through these steps, you peel back another layer of heaviness until what remains is your soul’s truth: that you are love and light.

Working through radical forgiveness is a doorway where we can rise from darkness or out of the ashes to be the phoenix and experience a rebirth to manifest a life filled with meaning. It is only from that place where we may become grounded in our heart coherence and connect with our souls, our divine purpose, and our deepest intention of being. It is in this beauty that we may rise and inspire others and ourselves to live with soul alignment and soul purpose. This is our truest sense of self. This is where we honor ourselves to be at a place of ease, where we can lean into absolute gratitude and joy.

Personally, releasing the idea that I must forgive “someone” is liberating and empowering, to recognize that each person is part of my soul journey and contributing to my divine lessons of unfolding and personal growth. Greeting that freedom and taking back my power to honor myself and not waste my energy on negativity or focusing on blaming another has been an integral part of my own healing.
